Eco-friendly food packaging is a significant operational aspect that Food & Beverage (F&B) and Restaurants offering take-away services have been taking into consideration due to growing awareness of consumers to use recycled materials.

According to some recent studies, consumers are paying more attention to how food is prepared and packaged. In recent years, the most important aspect and appeal of food packaging has shifted towards how attractive it is for the consumers.

This appeal lies mainly in what the packaging says about the company and the product they are delivering.

In addition, consumers are now eager to know that they’re not contributing to any ecologically harmful practices, and their goal today is to keep the planet sustainable and healthy. Companies across the globe have incorporated eco-friendly food packaging to reach this goal. However, as much of the expenses are related to revamping technology, eco-friendly food packaging has become expensive.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak has been declared a pandemic, coverage has started shifting away from sustainability towards the deadly virus and its impact across the globe. The pandemic has hugely affected the eco-friendly food packaging industry.

In the food packaging industry, several companies were coming up with technological innovations and switching to eco-friendly alternatives to help the environment. Plastic waste became a trending topic and debates rose over the issues it upraised. Biodegradable or edible packaging was broadly discussed as alternatives for plastic packaging.

Since March, various countries across the world have implemented social distancing rules and lockdowns as an attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19 virus.

Sustainability is being observed to take a backseat in this pandemic to prevent the virus from spreading and save lives, which has adversely affected the market. According to a report published by Research Dive, the global eco-friendly food packaging market is likely to witness a decrease in the growth rate due to shutting down of various industries.

Some studies have suggested that the COVID-19 virus can spread through plastic and cardboard whereas other studies have disputed these facts.

A number of restaurants and supermarkets are increasingly using single-use materials to wrap food products because of this concern. The anti-plastic movements are seen to be put on hold as a result of being in lockdown.

Environmental Concerns in the Pandemic

According to a survey conducted by FMCG Gurus, it was found that about 40% of the consumers across the globe now have positive perceptions for eco-friendly food packaging due to the COVID-19 virus and that around 55% are more concerned regarding the environment than before the pandemic. Furthermore, the survey results also revealed that about 47% of the consumers are willing to pay extra for eco-friendly food packaging.

This will help the market to sustain in these trying times and grow exponentially post the pandemic crisis.

While sustainability appears to have taken a backseat, companies are still working on methods to become more sustainable. Although sustainability may not be talked about as much as before the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts are always continuing to help the environment.
